Review: Not suitable for children

From director Peter Templeman comes this absolute gem of an Aussie film, Not Suitable For Children.

Starring our very own Ryan Kwanten, a Home and Away alumnus and star of the US hit show True Blood, this fresh take on the lives and friendships of twenty-somethings is bound to hit home with local audiences.

Set in Sydney’s eclectic and vibrant inner-west, there’s something strangely thrilling here about the familiar: the local bars, the slightly dilapidated share-houses and the raucous but entirely unglamorous parties, all set to a stellar soundtrack featuring The Black Keys and Aussie bands such as The Mess Hall, Mammal, and The Bamboos.

It’s through this familiarity that Templeman captures that very particular period of young lives where the house and housemates form the centre of our lives and days are a contradictory blend of chaos and idleness.

Jonah (Kwanten), Stevie (Sarah Snook) and Gus (Ryan Corr) are housemates enjoying a hedonistic lifestyle free of responsibility and full of parties and sex – until the pleasure is interrupted when Jonah is diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Good news is he won’t lose his hair; bad news is the treatment will leave him infertile.

The hopelessly immature Jonah thus begins his search to find a baby mama in the next four weeks before his operation.

Struggling to persuade the practical women that surround him, including an ex-girlfriend (Bojana Novakovic), a lesbian couple and multiple Facebook friends, Jonah eventually turns to the concerned and caring Stevie to help him in his search.

What follows is a hilarious and often touching exploration of flawed yet fabulous friendships and just what happens when ‘the rest of your life’ comes far more quickly than expected.

Not suitable for children – but definitely for anybody else.
