Jurassic Lounge came to life for the final session this summer with a mammoth closing night party, complete with live music, art, comedy and popup bars. More than 2000 people turned up to celebrate the end of the fifth season.
Nostalgia reigned supreme on the ‘80s-themed level of the Australian Museum. The ‘80s Silent Disco gave guests (including me) an excuse to whip out the running man and moonwalk without the shame that usually accompanies these moves.
The blast from the past continued with pinball machines, lomography cameras and Rubik’s cubes – truly a hipster’s paradise. In the atrium, the Hip Hop dance battle was a tame affair but drew impressive crowds.
Everyone was perched on tiptoe for the My Little Pony Burlesque show that followed. A young woman trotted out in candy-coloured latex, neighing and prancing about to the My Little Pony theme song.
She playfully combed her mane with an oversized pink brush and straddled an audience member in a saddle. Giddy up.
The museum was bursting at the seams and the overwhelming crowds made it virtually impossible to squeeze into the theatre for the Sydney Comedy Festival preview shows. Fortunately, this was the perfect time to check out the dinosaurs after dark and enjoy the live music and DJs.
The night literally ended with a bang, with a dinosaur piñata and cascading streamers, capping off five fabulous years of Jurassic Lounge. Jurassic Lounge ran every Tuesday from February 12 to April 16 at the Australian Museum.
