Animated movies have always had their attraction: kids love them, and since parents have to accompany them, these movies end up raking in at the box-office. Occasionally a movie comes along that has a new story to tell, and that becomes a genuine hit.
Sony Pictures Releasing’s latest offering, Adventures of Zambezia (3D), is an animated family comedy about a bird who must learn a lesson in courage, friendship, survival and honour.
The story is simple, but in 3D, making it more likely this tale will be a big box office success.
Adventures of Zambezia tells the story of a spirited young falcon named Kai who when he learns of Zambezia, the fabulous city of birds, leaves his remote country home against the wishes of his father.
But when his dad is captured by an evil lizard who plans to attack the city, Kai must learn the importance of teamwork to rescue his father, save his new friends and help keep Zambezia lizard-free.
Wayne Thornley, director of the movie, expands on the essence of the story explaining that Kai, brought up in isolation and taught to value self-sufficiency over everything, embarks on an action-packed journey that ends in him realising the value of community and teamwork.
“In so doing he saves the bird city from destruction in its greatest hour of need.”
Thornley believes the film will appeal to adults as well as children and is certain both will leave the cinema “feeling like they’ve just visited a delightful world they’ve never experienced before, chuckling at memories of quirky characters, exciting action and a story with heart”.
“We’ve opened a window into a world many children have not seen: the mighty Zambezi River, the awesome Victoria Falls and the eclectic and colourful tapestry of art, craft and pop culture to be found across the African continent,” adds Thornley.
The trailer looks like an extended ode to the Angry Birds game but the inspiring story is sure to strike a chord with kids. And with the likes of Samuel L Jackson, Abigail Breslin, Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy lending their majestic voices to the film, children will have one more reason to rejoice this holiday.
Adventures of Zambezia releases in Australian cinemas this Easter Holiday: Vic/Qld/NT March 28; NSW/SA/ACT April 11; WA/Tas, April 20.
