The LA Kings have won the Stanley Cup for a second time in three years following a dramatic double overtime win against the New York Rangers in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon (AEST).
A very close couple of games in LA at the beginning of the series had the home team shading NY in both to lead 2-0. Then a lacklustre performance by the Rangers at home saw the series lead blow out to 3.
But in a positive performance on Thursday, New York won the game 2-1 and gave themselves a fighting opportunity, making it 3-1 in the series.
On Saturday the two teams returned to LA where the score ended up being 2-2 after regulation time. The game was an epic as the overtime tussle between the two sides saw a number of chances for both teams to win it. But great saves from both of the goaltenders continued to see the anticipation soar.
A goal from The Rangers would’ve taken the series back to New York for a thrilling series. A goal from the Kings would see them crowned champions. It was an absolute thriller.
Finally, Alec Martinez popped up to give the Kings a 3-2 victory (4-1 in the best of 7 series) sending the home fans into raptures.
It was a well deserved win and one that will surely intensify the East v West coast rivalry between the two sides for years to come.
