Dig deep for a dollar on July 25

Children’s programs in Ceduna, South Australia will benefit from fundraiser

What can you buy for a dollar? A lot if you spend it right.

1$Day is dedicated to reducing the global inequities in children’s health and education.  And it just takes $1.

There are over 22 million people in Australia. What if everyone in Australia donated just one dollar for those who can’t?

“If we can give just one dollar on one day of the year, the funds raised can be enormous,” says Sophie Bartho, co-founder of fundraising event 1$day.

“Our ideal behind 1$day was to create a capital raising event that can change the way fundraising has been done previously. We are not selling merchandise, chocolate, expensive tickets or inviting anyone to an arduous physical challenge. We are simply asking for $1 from everyone – regardless if you are the CEO or a kid with pocket money. 1$day is an equaliser and enabler.”

The 1$day’s mission is to reduce the global inequities in children’s health and education.

Sophie was inspired by her own children. She recognised that they had access to excellent healthcare, education and circumstances but that many children in the world don’t have the bare necessities like clean water, a safe home and nutritious food.

A staggering 7.6 million children die every year from preventable diseases before their fifth birthday.

Sophie and her husband Rob Wilcher both work full-time and have three children but are dedicated to making a difference to children’s lives. Last year’s inaugural 1$day raised more than $55,000 and Save the Children Australia was chosen as the principal recipient.

One dollar can make all the difference

The funds raised were used to build a new village health centre in Laos, which will serve over 11,750 people, including nearly 5000 children. The clinic opened last month.

Sophie and Rob have big plans for 1$day and want to go global in the next few years expanding it to include One Pound Day and One Euro Day.

Save the Children was chosen as the recipient again this year, with funds committed to an Aboriginal school attendance program in the Northern Territory, and building water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in Ethiopian schools.

1$day this year is on July 25. If you would like to donate to 1$day, become a 1$ Champion for your family, school, college, university or workplace. To find out more about the programs that this year’s 1$day is supporting go to www.onedollarday.org
